In honour of Sir Sandford Fleming, who among many accomplishments, designed Canada’s first postage stamp, the three penny beaver, and advocated the adoption of the beaver as the official “Canadian Animal”– a beaver in some form, perhaps holding a sprig of red whortleberry (the plant badge of the Mackintoshes).

Birthplace of Standard Time, The

At a meeting of the Canadian Institute in Toronto in 1879, Sandford Fleming first presented his idea for a standardized, worldwide system for reckoning time. His proposal led to the International Prime Meridian Conference in Washington five years later at which the present system of Standard Time was adopted.

In 1878 Fleming began publishing a series of papers for the Royal Canadian Institute of which he was a founder. In these papers he advocated his ideas for an international standard time system.

Canadian popular historian, Pierre Berton, recounts the story of one of the most challenging and important political and engineering projects in Canadian history, the building of the country’s first trans-continental railway. Beginning as part of Prime Minister John A Macdonald’s deal in 1871 to have British Columbia join Canada, the project seemed foolhardy for such a young nation. (more…)

Le 5 septembre 1883, à 4,600 pieds au-dessus du niveau de la mer, dans les monts Selkirk, Sandford Fleming participa à la formation du Canadian Alpine Club et en fut le premier président.

Dr. Edouard Deville, Surveyor General of Canada, named this point because Sir Sandford Fleming’s brandy flask was broken on a rock here. CPR surveyor Fleming was exploring a possible route for the CPR in 1872 when this “disaster” occurred. (more…)
